Review: Bob Dylan at Pechanga

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

The Bob Dylan of 2008 doesn’t have the voice of the Bob Dylan of 1963. It’s aged and gruff. But that’s not why Dylan’s show at the 1,200-seat showroom at Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula sold out in 12 minutes.

On Thursday night, moments before Dylan took the stage for a two-hour performance, a voice boomed out of the darkness nailing why the theater was filled with everyone from pre-teens to seniors, introducing Dylan as the “Poet Laureate of rock ‘n’ roll.”

With dozens of albums, hundreds of songs, Dylan’s thumbprint is all over the pop culture history for most of the last 50 years.

Solange Knowles Hopes To Emerge From Sis’ Shadow

Friday, September 5th, 2008

NEW YORK (AP) - Solange Knowles turns out to be a little sensitive about using a certain b-word. No, not that b-word. This b-word: Beyonce.

Solange, 22, is reluctant to discuss her older sister — the Bootylicious One — and it’s understandable why: All anyone seems to want to know is about their relationship, and yet one of them is still trying to make a name for herself.

“I’ve answered that question and then that’ll be the one thing from a 40-minute interview that gets any play. That is what becomes frustrating,” she says. “It’s a little repetitive.”

Sorry, Solange.

The good news is that she has something of her own to crow about: “SoL-AngeL and the Hadley St.

Friday, September 5th, 2008

FISHKILL, N.Y. (AP) - Akon will go to trial on criminal charges he tossed a fan offstage at a concert last summer.

The 35-year-old singer is accused of tossing a teenager off the stage during a June 2007 concert at a minor league baseball stadium near Poughkeepsie. Another concertgoer said she suffered a concussion when the boy landed on her.

Akon asked for the jury trial in Fishkill Town Court on Wednesday. He’s due back in court Dec. 1. He pleaded not guilty in December to misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree harassment, a violation.

His hits include “Smack That” with Eminem and “I Wanna Love You” with Snoop Dogg.

Britney Spears Credits Father With ‘Saving’ Her Life

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Troubled pop star Britney Spears has credited her father Jamie with saving her life - after he stepped in to help her following a series of breakdowns.

The Gimme More hitmaker was hospitalized at the beginning of this year under a mental health order, and her father subsequently took over her legal and business affairs - becoming conservator of her estate.

Spears was also stripped of visitation rights to her two sons, but following several months under the guidance of her dad she has won back the right to see her children and is now working on a career comeback.

And Spears insists she will always be grateful to Jamie for helping her sort her life out.

She tells British newspaper the Daily Star, “My father saved my life.

New Metallica Album Leaks, Lars Ulrich is OK With That

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Perhaps Lars Ulrich finally learned the old adage, “Don’t bite the hand that feeds.” (Which kind of sounds like a Metallica song title, no?) After infamously shaking his finger at the Internet’s capabilities (file-sharing for those keeping score), the drummer is turning a new leaf in the wake of the leak of Metallica’s new album, ‘Death Magnetic.’ The leak came to pass after a French record shop sold copies of the album nearly two weeks before it was due on shelves.

“If this thing leaks all over the world today or tomorrow, happy days,” Ulrich told his local Bay Area radio station Live 105 FM. (Read the full post about ‘New Metallica Album Leaks, Lars Ulrich is OK With That’…)

Kid Rock Owes His Soul to Amy Winehouse

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Kid Rock calls himself an American Badass and Amy Winehouse knows that she’s no good. But who ever thought that Rock would be calling on Winehouse for musical inspiration? Granted, Rock’s does a little rap-rock, a little C&W — he’s an open fella.

Now, Rock, who hails from “north of Detroit, way south of Heaven,” is getting into the classic Motown sound .. but by way of England. “The only thing I’ve been listening to lately is Amy Winehouse,” Rock said. “She’s got me into all that old school soul thing … (Read the full post about ‘Kid Rock Owes His Soul to Amy Winehouse’…)

Potent Quotables: Huckabee Mocks Madge

Friday, September 5th, 2008

“The reporting of the past few days have proven tackier than a costume change at a Madonna concert.” –Mike Huckabee

The former presidential hopeful used his speech at the RNC as an opportunity to slam Madonna, whose tour visual effects offended his party’s nominee.
